Background:

Launched December 4, 1996 and landing on Mars on July 4, 1997, Pathfinder was a low-cost NASA Discovery program mission that delivered the first wheeled vehicle ever used on another planet, the small Sojourner rover. It pioneered the airbag landing technique and operated for three months, returning over 16,000 images and 8.5 million weather measurements. Key findings suggested Mars was once warmer and wetter, with liquid water flowing across its surface. Both lander and rover far outlived their design lifespans, and the mission laid the groundwork for every Mars rover that followed.
