"NASA was founded on July 29, 1958, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act into law. The 50th anniversary on October 1, 2008 found the agency in the midst of deep transition; in the closing year of the Bush presidency, amid a worldwide economic crisis, and actively implementing a new Vision for Space Exploration aimed at returning humans to the Moon and eventually reaching Mars. Celebrations took place across the agency and beyond. NASA received special recognition at EAA AirVenture 2008 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the largest annual air show in the U.S. where former astronauts hosted birthday celebrations and paid tribute to 50 years of NASA aeronautics. NASA also released an immersive interactive multimedia experience taking visitors on a virtual tour through each decade of the agency's history, featuring pavilions with historic video, computer animation, and appearances by iconic figures from aerospace history."
