Background:
"Spanning three decades, NASA's Space Shuttle Program flew 135 missions and carried 355 individuals into space across five iconic orbiters. Columbia (OV-102) was the first to fly, debuting with STS-1 in April 1981, and completed 27 successful missions before being lost with all seven crew members during re-entry on STS-107 in February 2003. Challenger (OV-099) flew 9 missions before tragically breaking apart 73 seconds after launch on STS-51-L in January 1986, also claiming seven lives. Discovery (OV-103) became the workhorse of the fleet, logging 39 missions (more than any other orbiter) including the return-to-flight missions after both disasters, and the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope. Atlantis (OV-104) flew 33 missions, including the Mir docking program and numerous ISS flights, and had the honor of flying the final shuttle mission of all, STS-135, in July 2011. Endeavour (OV-105), the youngest orbiter, was built as a replacement for Challenger and flew 25 missions."
